A hairdresser also needs to keep abreast on the latest styles and trends.  That means that a good hairdresser is going to read magazine and look at the hair of others in order to learn how to cut client’s hair in the way that is popular.  A good hairdresser is going to be able to take a style and find a way to cut hair into that style.

Not only will a good hairdresser know the trends, but she will also know which trends are popular with which age groups.  For example, there might be a hot trend for people in their forties.  Someone in their twenties is not going to want to follow that trend.  Make sure you know ample trends for people of all age groups.

You can use the trends as suggestions for people who are not sure of what they want to get done.  You will also benefit from knowing the trends in another way.  When a client comes in and says they want a certain haircut they saw in a magazine, you will know the trends so you will be able to guess what they are talking about.

When a person goes into a salon, they expect their hairdresser to be up on the latest trends.  If their hairdresser is not up on the trends, the person will think their hairdresser does not know what she is doing.  This can cause a lot of problems for the hairdressers as she tries to get more clients.

Whenever you see a hairstyle that you like or that you have not seen before, get some information on it.  Find out what it is called and what age group is wearing it.

As soon as you find out about new trends, you also must find out what goes into cutting hair in that way.  You want to make sure you are able to properly mimic the trend.  A client will be unhappy if they go to you in order to get a certain trend and you cut their hair in a way that does not look like the trend.

If you do that, you are going to end up losing business.  Study up on trends in every way possible so you will be prepared to cut your clients’ hair in the way they want.

New Techniques

A good hairdresser is also going to realise that techniques change over time.  It is important to stay current with techniques and learn how to incorporate different techniques into your haircutting style.

Often, hairdressers who have been in the business for a long time fail to keep up with changes in techniques.  Then, younger hairdressers come onto the scene and they have the cutting edge techniques that are used in hairdressing at that time. 

A hairdresser must realise that her education never ends.  Never let the younger generation know more about hairdressing than you do.  Stay on top of all of the latest techniques so you will be able to incorporate them into your work.

Read and touch base with other hairdressers.  Don’t be afraid to learn something from someone else, even if they are younger.  You might learn a new technique that you really enjoy, and you also might find an easier way to do some standard things.  It is much better to learn things from others than to let others know things you do not know.

You can also take advantage of the many classes that are offered to hairdressers.  That is a good way to learn about techniques that have changed over the years.  You might find you like doing newer techniques instead of the older ones that you learned when you started in the business.

When you make all of these things a part of your life, you will then be able to have a successful career as a hairdresser.  You have to be able to be open to the changes involved in hairdressing and you need to incorporate all of the qualities that will make you a success.
