Damage Control

A hairdresser is also needed for damage control.  There are many times when a hairdresser has the role of a repair man.  Like a person will take a broken item to a repair shop, people take mistakes other hairdressers have made to different salons and expect a miracle to be worked.

A hairdresser is called upon to fix the mistakes of another hairdresser.  When that happens, you will have to work with a haircut that is not what the client wanted.  You will have to find a way to make the haircut look as good as possible under those conditions.

You will then have to try to make the client as happy as possible.  While this is not an easy task, it is a way to get new clients.  When someone has gone to another hairdresser and gotten their hair messed up, they need someone to turn to.  If you are able to fix it and make them happy, you might have a client for life.

When you succeed, you will be seen as a miracle worker of sorts.  You can gain a lot of respect and trust when you are able to please the customer in this situation.

Listen to the Customer

It is also the role of the hairdresser to be a great listener.  Even when you think you know best, you have to listen to what the customer wants.  You can offer advice, but ultimately it is the customer that calls the shots.

If the customer wants her head shaved, you can try to tell her what that will look like.  Still, if she insists, you will have to shave her head.  You need to take in what the customer wants and then work in order to get it.  Even if you do not think it is for the best, you have to work with what you have.

You will also have to listen to your clients in other ways as well.  Many people look to their hairdressers as friends.  That means when you have a client in your chair, she may need to talk to you.  As a hairdresser, it is your job to listen.

Consider that whenever a client is in your chair, they have your attention for the time they are there.  As long as they are in your chair, you need to listen to them and talk to them.  It will help you have more return customers, which is very important in this business.

Help Someone Become Someone Else

You will also be called on to help someone create a whole new persona.  There are times when someone will come to you and they want you to make them into someone else.  This is more than a simple makeover.  This is a complete departure from the look they have.  You will have to take a look at them and decide how you will go about that.

You will work your magic and make them into a new person.  In order to do this, you will need to have all of the skills as a hairdresser and use them in order to make the best cut possible.

The Stylist

As a hairdresser, you also need to be able to offer great styles to your clients.  A hairdresser is expected to be able to be up to date with current styles and offer them to clients.  As a stylist, a hairdresser might even get customers that only want a style and not a haircut.

Colourist

People also go to a hairdresser for colouring, and you will need to be a professional when it comes to providing hair colour to your clients.  Clients want the best when it comes to colouring.  Even if you are off the slightest bit, it will be a problem.  You need to be able to provide great colour to your clients time and time again.

A hair dresser has many roles, but most importantly, it is up to the hair dresser to cut great hair.  Assess each customer and treat each one as a different person.  That will allow you to make the right choices when cutting hair.

Trend Setter

Many people do not realise that a hairdresser is actually a trend setter, but she is.  Many people look to their hairdresser in order to find out what styles are in.  They expect their hairdressers to have the latest fashions on their heads.

When a hairdresser starts wearing a style, she can expect some clients to mimic that style.  That is because clients know hairdressers stay up with the cutting edge of fashion.

By staying up on fashion, they become trend setters for their community.  Styles that have yet to hit the small towns or the outskirts of cities finally get recognition because of the hairdresser.

Without a hairdresser, many towns and people would not know what styles were in or out.  However, by turning to their hairdressers, they are able to find out about the latest fashions and stay current.

Support

A hairdresser also has the role of offering support to her clients.  There are times when clients don’t feel happy with their looks or their lives.  It is up to the hairdresser to change that, even if it is only for the time they are sitting in their chair.

A hairdresser needs to use her skills and cheer the person up.  Since part of her job is to make the client feel beautiful, she needs to make the client happy as well.

While this is not necessarily in the job description for a hairdresser, it is an important role to take on.  You want your clients to associate good feelings with you, and the harder you work to make them happy, the more likely you will be to accomplish that.

Depending on where you work, your role as a hairdresser might vary slightly.  Still, you will have these fundamental roles when you cut someone’s hair.  Do not make the mistake of thinking your only job as a hairdresser is to cut hair.  You must embrace all of your roles in order to have a long career in the field.

Take the time to read your customers so you can also provide them with other things they may want.  The role of a hairdresser is constantly changing and you want to make sure you give your clients the services they want and need.
